S/CoH: The Fallen

Description

I picked up my copy of the Silmarillion today to read a bit more (I'm almost done, really) and when I finished "Of Turin Turambar" I felt like I had to draw something for it. The story of the Children of Hurin was a lot more...not moving, but...oh I can't even articulate what I'm trying to say. Here: When I read "Of Beren and Luthien", the vaunted story of love and tragedy, etc, I was like 'get on with the story already. I get that we have a scruffy buff guy and a gorgeous elf maiden. WHERE'S THE STORY'. I had figured that Turin's tale would be similar, but somewhere in the first few pages I realized I was hooked. I don't know if it's just that the characters have more depth, or that they're infinitely more tragic, or what. (I guess I'll get a chance to revisit these feels when I actually read my copy of The Children of Hurin later.)
I was already familiar with Beleg and the basics of Turin and Nienor, but WOW is their story convoluted.

Aaaanyway, here we have:
Nienor, sister to Turin, who is friend to the elven marchwarden Beleg and the Noldorin prince-turned-escaped-thrall Gwindor.

Nienor: I only watched the first ep of Game of Thrones but I imagine her as a slightly less quailing Daenarys. (Yes, I know that Daenarys becomes kickass later, hush. Not my point.) ~liga-marta's deviations have heavily influenced my image of her. (Additional note: she is the third Tolkien Legendarium female I've ever drawn, while the guys number over one billion. I find this awesome because prior to LotR I actually went out of my way to avoid drawing men, hence all the naruto and bleach genderbending pics. hahahahaahaaaaaa *dead*) Note #2: apparently Nienor's eyes could have been either blue or grey, so I gave her blue to Turin's grey because it makes sense that the more different they were, the harder time Turin would have had believing Brandir of their relation.

Turin: Beren without the beard. Wait- handsome Beren without the beard. He's supposed to be pretty - I quote the Silm here with "and his face more beautiful than any other among mortal Men, in the Elder Days...and even among the Elves he might be taken for one from the great houses of the Noldor". He bears the black blade created by Eol (it was called Anglachel when Beleg made use of it and then Gurthang when Turin took it up).

Beleg: Hair color never specified, and like Celegorm my image of him is influenced by popular art...so silver it is, which isn't impossible. He's Sindarin, and Elu Thingol had silver hair. About his hand...he's holding an invisible bow, I swear. I drew it in on the prelim layer and then forgot to ink it and then I was like no TOO LATE screw it. I did give him an arm guard, though. He's right handed according to its placement... Also, side braids because technically Doriath was the precursor to Mirkwood and yes.

Gwindor: He's an elf, yes. But once he came back from the mines where he was imprisoned, he looked to be "one of the aged among mortal Men, because of his torments and his labours". I'd imagine he wasn't too concerned with looks or clothing after all that so he gets plain foresty clothes.

It's titled "The Fallen" because there is SO MUCH DEATH in that story. All of these characters die. (I'm not sure why I picked these exact characters to illustrate, actually...hmm....)

I admit that one of the most pressing problems in Tolkien art is the blandness of expression-all characters seem to be focused on a vague, far off goal, eyes slightly unfocused on the viewer.
You, however, have managed to sidestep this wonderfully. Each character here feels alive, not to mention true to the Narn Ni Chin Hurin. I could hear their voices in my mind, as though I were reading a book and they had to stand for this portrait.
Ahem.
Neinor: Can we go now? This is boring...
Turin: Are you threatening me? ARE YOU THREATENING ME???
Beleg: Once we're done, let's go exploring.
Gwindor: Um...I just would like to be left alone. Can I leave? Please?

Not, I assure you, what they would say in canon, but I like the picture very much indeed.
